Abstract:

Original installment: portrait photographs by Carl Van Vechten of Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas in the 1930s. Includes photographs taken at Bilignin Villa, Chambery, Stein's home at 27 Rue de Fleurus, in New York, and at University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary. Also present are a view of Pablo Picasso's home, a portrait of Leo Stein, a photograph of Richard Banks' 1963 painting of Stein, and views of the casts and productions of Four saints in three acts, The Mother of us all, Yes is for a very young man, Dr. Faustus, Ladies' voices, and Brewsie & Wille.
Later additions: PIC folders: copy photographs of Gertrude Stein by Carl Van Vechten; snapshots of a San Francisco Public Library exhibit on Stein curated by Paul Padgette in 1964; copies of snapshot photographs of Gertrude Stein and Annette Rosenshine at Stein's home at 27 rue de Fleurus in Paris, 1908; snapshots of Alice B. Toklas and Harriet Lane Levy in Italy, 1909; miscellaneous postcards and greeting cards illustrated with images of Stein. AX folder: photograph of a James Chapin portrait painting of singer Ruby Greene painted when she performed in Stein's play Four Saints in Three Acts. B folders: oversize portrait photograph of Stein taken by Van Vechten in 1935; 2 copies of illustrated broadside There There Gertrude Stein. C folders: original hand-lettered and hand-painted signs used in Padgette's 1964 SFPL exhibit on Stein; poster for Gertrude Stein Memorial Bookshop, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; poster for San Francisco Museum of Art exhibit Four Americans in Paris, 1971; artistic print depicting Stein and Toklas, "The girls are the girls are the girls", by H. Francis, 1975.
